Dhaka : We are better than 2015. Business is getting better. It is now a completely brand new hotel, after the refurbishment.

Keerthi Weragoda CHA, USA, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Park Residence Hotel, said this while talking to The Bangladesh Monitor at his office.

Keerthi said guests from NGOs, RMG sector and commercial entities are staying at this property.

We have a number of Sri Lankans coming and staying, as this hotel is well known in Sri Lanka.

Keerthi said the UN system still seems to be a bit hesitant to visit Bangladesh after the Holey Artisan incident.

If the Home Ministry sits with them and gives them the assurance of safety, then all the hotels in the locality will get more (UN) guests and be able to improve their business further he suggested.

New era

Keerthi said, when Royal Park Residence Hotel opened at Banani in the city in 2000, it ushered in a new era.

The 66-roomed boutique hotel was a 100 per cent Board of Investment (BOI) entity and the only property with both ISO and HACCP standardisation.

This hotel was set up when there was only two main hotels in the city - Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka and Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.

After the opening of the new properties, there has been a price war. Once a price war starts, everyone gets hurt. This results in lower rates. Every-body loses in the price war.

The number of rooms in the city has increased, and many more hotels are coming up. But the number of guests coming into the country has not increased in that proportion. Everyone has and will have to share almost the same number of guests, he opined.

Hospitable people

Keerthi Weragoda said, I like the people of Bangladesh. Like the people of Sri Lanka, they are very hospitable.

To attract tourists, you need three things - hospitable people, attractions and infrastructure.

You have hospitable people - you just need fine-tuning. You have attractions. Places around those have to be developed. But the most important thing - infrastructure - has to be ready.

You have a good beach at Cox's Bazar, but it's dirty. All the people should get together and clean the beach.
