I'm optimistic about the future of hospitality industry in Bangladesh

Dhaka : In the hospitality industry, it's not the job that you do, but how you do it matters the most. Auparupa Ray, General Manager, Golden Tulip The GrandMark Dhaka has lived by this principle during her academics and career spanning two decades in the hospitality industry.
Ray is a seasoned hospitality professional and exemplary business leader who has been instrumental in increasing growth rates and at the same time delivering exceptional value to clients.
In her current role as GM for at Golden Tulip The GrandMark Dhaka, Auparupa Ray has developed and implemented short-term strategies which have resulted in quick increase in the business graph and continues to grow, making it one of the most recognised brands in Bangladesh.
She believes that Bangladesh’s market has huge potential and is optimistic about the future of the hospitality industry in the country. The strategic geographical position of Bangladesh between South and Southeast Asia has made it an entryway to both these markets. Minimal restrictions on foreign property or investment by the government, competitive labour force, large English-speaking group along with a strong consumer base, definitely makes it a great choice for investors.
While Auparupa Ray indicates that business travellers are major contributors to the hospitality sector, she does not disregard the role of tourism. Tourism sector has grown with the country’s pace of economic growth. There is a large number of domestic tourists who go for vacations often. However, foreign tourists are gradually increasing which is a very positive trend that has been observed.
Hotels are busy throughout the entire year now as compared to few years ago when it was limited to the holiday season in July and winter vacations in December, she said.
From Auparupa Ray's perspective, key obstacles to increasing women's representation in leadership positions are the lack of balance between professional and personal life and absence of strong career progression plans. There are very few female GMs in this sector. The biggest challenge is time, as this job demands a lot of working hours and an irregular working schedule.
Armed with a Bachelors degree in hotel management from Bangalore University in India, Auparupa Ray started her career with the Hilton Golden Palms as a Guest Relations Executive and there has been no looking back ever since.
She has worked with marquee hospitality giants in India including The Leela Kempinski, The Intercontinental, Le Meridien Bangalore, Hyatt to name a few. Her business acumen, result-oriented approach and most importantly her passion for customer delight has made her reach great heights in her career. She is one amongst the youngest General Manager's in the geographies she has served.
It is difficult to balance personal life and work. As a mother of three growing-up boys she herself is a living example of a working mom trying to strike a balance.
