Dhaka : Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka is on top regarding meeting or banquet facilities. They can cater to 1,200 to 1,500 guests at Oasis where big events like banquets, weddings, receptions and exhibitions can be arranged. As they are centrally located, they are holding many events, which is a plus point for them.
Asif Ahmed, Acting General Manager, Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka said this while talking to The Bangladesh Monitor at his hotel office.
Earnings will be better
The hotel's room occupancy is also good. They try to maintain it at the level of at least 60 per cent. And they hope their earnings will be better than last year. He is very positive in terms of income.
He pointed out, "Compared to the new hotels, our staff members are more experienced and we know the guests' needs better."
On a query, he said, guest response to renovation of rooms has been positive - the response has been more positive than before as they are able to fulfill guest expectations more.
Asif Ahmed said Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka is carrying out different promotions around the year. Recently they held Indonesian Food Festival, Spanish Food Festival, Thai Food Festival etc.
"We will be celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27 with Bangladeshi Food Festival where our culture will also be projected." Diners will receive a 27 per cent discount at our restaurants.
Providing international service upholding Bangladeshi culture has always been their baseline, he said.
They always hold food festivals on the occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. December 25 every year is the day for children and of course, they ring in the New Year on the 31st.
This winter they will be offering BBQ at Pool Café in the evening on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from October till March next year.
Answering a question, he said Ciao has been turned into a meeting room which can accommodate 30 persons. Pacific Avenue is the new bar for hotel guests while the former one has been converted into meeting room "Padma" which can accommodate 130 persons.
Talking about tourism, he suggested harnessing the experience of countries which have been successful in attracting tourists like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Tourism is one of the main contributors to their GDP, he said.
Asif Ahmed said, "We have so many potential attractions like longest sea beach at Cox's Bazar, largest mangrove forest Sundarbans and so many heritage sites. We can combinedly - different tourism and hospitality stakeholders joining hands - project them."
Employment to 10 to 20 lakh youths can be provided by training them with knowledge and soft skills that are needed for the sector. For that we need a master plan/policy for short, medium and long-term roadmap to harness tourism potentials.
Asif Ahmed suggested the reintroduction of city tours, particularly on Friday mornings. There are many things in Dhaka which we can show to the tourists in five to six hours.
In cooperation with Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) and support of Tourist Police, we can show our guests National Museum, Curzon Hall, Shaheed Minar. From there we can take them to Lalbagh Fort, then Louis Kahn-designed Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban before coming back to the hotel.
Tourist Police personnel can be on board the tourist bus or at the tourist spots but presence of uniformed police should not be too obvious, he felt, adding washroom facilities should be there for them at most of the places.
Because of the MRT work, Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka in cooperation with RAJUK and Hatirjheel authority has created a road near the BGMEA building through which guests can enter the hotel easily. They did this to enhance guest arrival experience.
It (MRT) may cause a little bit of inconvenience now but once MRT is completed, it will definitely have a positive impact on the city.
