Dhaka : The average budgeted growth for hotels as a whole runs between 3-5 per cent on an annual basis. Yet, after receiving the most secured hotel certificate and UNDSS approval in 2017-2018, Amari Dhaka grew by 22 per cent and is already on the way to have a growth of 5 per cent this year.

Kelly Lewis, General Manager of Amari Dhaka said this while talking to The Bangladesh Monitor at the hotel recently.

Proud of its Asian roots, Amari creates memorable experiences that embody the spirit of local culture as well as enhance the renowned traditions of Asian hospitality. The hotel is complemented by the colours and rhythms of the local setting offering warm, friendly spaces and impeccable service by their dedicated team.

Facilities

Amari Dhaka is conveniently located in the business and diplomatic district of the capital. The hotel offers facilities with an array of services and amenities including 134 contemporary guest rooms and suites.

It also provides separate meeting venues all fully-equipped to ensure that every detail is executed to perfection. It offers restaurants and bars headlined by the signature Amaya Food Gallery, Cascade Lobby Lounge and Deck 41. Guests are free to indulge and unwind at Breeze Spa, beat the heat with a swim or keep in shape at the hotel's fully-equipped FIT Centre.

Achievements

In September 2019, Amari Dhaka was awarded South Asian Travel Award 2019 in the top leading business hotel category. Amari also achieved the trip advisor certificate of excellence for 2017, 2018 and 2019 as well as Hotels.com 2017, 2018 and 2019 certificates. Also in the year 2015, Amari won Luxury Travel Guide Award.

The hotel is certified for the highest level of security by ONYX Hospitality Management (ONYX Security Level 10). It is the only hotel to have a Canine program having guard dogs brought from UK and handlers trained from the Secretary of State Ron Miller of Washington DC.

Type of guests

Amari is a 92 per cent corporate hotel since leisure is very rare in the country. "We have a very high capture rate, 50 per cent of the guests, we catered to once, stay again because of the exceptional service staff and food," said Lewis. "We serve approximately 35,000 guests a year, on an average," added Lewis.

The government must be conducive to come up with a master plan for the development of tourism. Until then the corporate sector will remain the primary focus for the hotel.

Prospects for new hotels

The new hotels that are coming up may struggle in the beginning unless they are from famous chains like Marriott. However, even they will have a tough time due to their location, said Lewis. There will surely be a struggle for good manpower too as English is essential to the hospitality world, claimed Lewis.

Kelly Lewis has been the General Manager at Amari Dhaka since its inception in March 2015. This September, Lewis was awarded the Bangladesh CMO Global Best General Manager 2019 Award. Before Amari Dhaka, he acted as the General Manager in hotels such as Dusit International, Indigo Pearl Phuket and Shangri-La's Golden Sands Resort.
