Dhaka: Qatar Airways expands its reach in one of the world’s fastest growing aviation markets by buying 5 percent share in China Southern Airlines.
Qatar Airways Group said the acquisition of China Southern’s additional shares contributes to their overall investment plan.
The Gulf carrier has a 49 percent stake in Air Italy, nearly 10 percent in Cathay Pacific and LATAM Airlines Group, and a 20 percent investment in International Airlines Group, the holding company for British Airways among others.
China Southern Airlines is a member of SkyTeam alliance which includes Delta, KLM, Air France and many more.
Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive, Qatar Airways, described China Southern to be one of the most reputable airlines in the Chinese domestic market.
He said, “Given the complementary strengths and resources of each of China Southern Airlines and Qatar Airways, there are opportunities for us to work together and build a long-term relationship in ways that would bring benefits to customers of both airlines.”
