After Delhi, Hyderabad airport introduces self-baggage drop facility

Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport’s Terminal-3 introduced self-baggage drop facility which is expected to reduce the wait time by 15-20 minutes. Domestic flyers can now use this facility as well.

Currently, only IndiGo passengers are able to use this facility and is soon expected to be extended to other airlines like Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways. The service will be available for international flyers post-mandatory approvals.

To use this facility, flyers will have to follow a two-step process and drop the luggage at one of the 14 self-baggage drop machines. From there, their bags will automatically be sent to the sorting area and then to the aircraft. Passenger will have to generate their boarding pass and baggage tag at self check-in kiosk. After finishing this process, passenger will have to scan their boarding pass, declare that luggage is free of prohibited items and load it on the designated belt.

“Passengers do not need to register separately to utilise this facility,” DIAL stated. “With each machine being able to cater up to three passengers per minute, the self-baggage drop facility significantly reduces the overall time taken by passengers to process their baggage at check-in counters,” said DIAL.

CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, “DIAL has been working relentlessly towards maximising passenger experience at the Delhi airport through various digitisation and automation initiatives. The self-baggage drop facility aims to make the passengers self-reliant, while at the same time reducing the time taken for baggage processing significantly and providing them the option to truly enjoy their time at the airport.”

The facility is meant to ensure a seamless travel experience for which 14 self-baggage drop machines have been installed, 12 fully automated and two hybrid, with the initial calibrated weight for each machine set at 120kg for baggage processing.

DIAL said the introduction of the facility reflected its commitment to innovation and continuously improving the airport experience for passengers, setting a new standard for convenience, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Following the suit, Hyderabad airport has also introduced the same facility. "In a bid to enhance efficiency and seamless travel for passengers, the GMR Hyderabad International Airport has introduced the self-baggage drop facility near the entry gate number-9",an official statement said.

The airport has installed eight fully automated self-baggage machines. These machines are equipped with scanners, scales and sensors enabling passengers to complete their baggage check-in facility in 45-60 seconds, the GHIAL said in a release on Monday.
