Singapore offers technology support for border, immigration security

Dhaka: Singapore has expressed interest in providing modern technology and technical assistance to Bangladesh to strengthen border and immigration security.

Outgoing Singaporean Chargé d’Affaires Mitchel Lee made the offer during a courtesy meeting with Minister of Home Affairs Salahuddin Ahmed at the Home Ministry office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on September 27, according to a PID handout.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations, capacity building of the Bangladesh Police, modernization of security systems at airports and land ports, technology transfer, economic and trade cooperation, and other issues of mutual interest.

Lee expressed Singapore’s willingness to assist Bangladesh in adopting modern technologies for border and immigration security and to provide technical support in these areas.

He also noted that bilateral relations and trade between Bangladesh and Singapore have continued to expand.

The home minister expressed hope that the appointment of a full-fledged Singaporean high commissioner to Bangladesh would be completed soon, saying it would help further strengthen bilateral relations and trade.

Ahmed highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries and said the Bangladesh government is working to establish modern, technology-based immigration and border security systems at airports and along the country’s frontiers.

He also expressed hope that cooperation between Bangladesh and Singapore would expand through joint efforts to combat extremism, enhance police training, and facilitate technology transfer.

Singapore’s incoming Chargé d’Affaires Philip Ong, Additional Secretary of the Political and Immigration Wing of the Home Ministry Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, and Second Secretary of the Singapore mission Dhanya Lingesh were present at the meeting.
