Emirates launches program to inspire aircraft material upcycling

Emirates Engineering has launched Material Futures Studio, a six-week program that challenges university students to transform retired aircraft materials into innovative new products. Led by the airline's Upcycling department, the initiative connects students with aviation professionals to solve real-world industry challenges while nurturing future engineering talent.

The inaugural program includes 23 students from Khalifa University, Emirates Aviation University and the University of Sharjah. After an orientation and behind-the-scenes tour of Emirates Engineering's maintenance and upcycling facilities, students will spend six weeks developing creative concepts for reusing retired aircraft materials under the guidance of Emirates Engineering experts.

The program will conclude with a showcase where students present their concepts and prototypes. The initiative aims to bridge academia and industry by providing practical experience, encouraging innovation and helping Emirates engage with emerging talent.

As part of its multi-billion-dollar fleet retrofit program covering 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, Emirates Engineering has been repurposing materials recovered from refurbished aircraft into handcrafted products, reducing waste and extending the life of valuable materials.

These initiatives include the Aircrafted by Emirates collection of luggage, bags and accessories made from reclaimed aircraft materials, as well as Aircrafted KIDS, which turns recovered fabrics into handmade backpacks. More than 4,000 backpacks have already been donated to children in 11 countries.
