Malaysia Airlines adopts IATA weather program to improve safety

Jakarta : Malaysia Airlines is strengthening its flight safety capabilities by joining the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Turbulence Aware program, a move aimed at improving real-time weather intelligence and supporting safer flight operations.

The program provides pilots with real-time turbulence data collected from participating airlines worldwide, helping flight crews better anticipate clear-air turbulence (CAT), make informed operational decisions and improve comfort for passengers and crew.

Malaysia Airlines Chief Operating Officer Aida Salfaraz Ahmad Fadzil said safety remains central to the airline's operations, and the adoption of advanced technologies and industry partnerships will help enhance operational resilience.

IATA said Malaysia Airlines' participation will expand turbulence data coverage, particularly across Asia, where complex weather conditions can create operational challenges. Frederic Leger, IATA's senior vice president for products and services, said timely turbulence data helps airlines reduce risks and deliver smoother travel experiences.

The move builds on Malaysia Airlines' broader safety initiatives, following its recognition as a Seven Star PLUS safety-rated airline by AirlineRatings.com.

With a network spanning Asia, Europe and Oceania, Malaysia Airlines said its participation in the Turbulence Aware program will contribute to global aviation safety efforts while supporting more efficient and reliable operations.
