Malaysia logs 28.8 million international arrivals in January–August

Dhaka: Malaysia welcomed 28.8 million international visitors between January and August, marking a 1.8% rise from the same period last year, according to local media reports, citing Tourism Malaysia.
Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director General (Promotion) Mohd Akbal Setia shared the figures on October 2 at the opening of the second International Tourism, Arts and Culture Exhibition and Conference (INTAC'26) in Kuala Lumpur.
Akbal said the growth reflects Malaysia's continued appeal as a travel destination. He added that the figures are especially relevant as the country pushes ahead with its Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign.
He noted that tourism contributes more than 15% to Malaysia's gross domestic product. The benefits reach hotels, e-hailing services, local artisans, and family-run restaurants, among others.
This year's INTAC edition brought together 154 exhibitors from 35 countries at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Akbal said the strong turnout shows the event's growing influence as an international platform for the tourism, arts, and culture sectors.
He also said the exhibition plays a vital role in expanding joint promotions and creating new tourism experiences that benefit both destinations and local communities.
Akbal urged all exhibitors and participants to make the most of the event to build business connections and explore long-term collaboration opportunities.
