MTB Foundation supports alternative livelihoods for Chandpur’s fishing families

The initiative was
carried out under the foundation's project, “Creating Alternative Livelihood
for Vulnerable Fishing Communities through Income Generating Activities
(IGAs).” Beneficiaries from Lalpur Union and Chandpur Pourashava received
support to start or expand small income-generating activities.
The assistance included
materials for goat rearing, poultry farming, homestead gardening and small
businesses. The activities are intended to be managed primarily by female
members of fishermen's families, enabling households to earn income throughout
the year when fishing is restricted.
Fishing bans are
introduced to protect fish stocks and support sustainable fisheries, but they
can leave fishing-dependent families facing financial difficulties. By
promoting alternative livelihoods, the project seeks to reduce households'
reliance on fishing and strengthen their ability to maintain income during
these periods.
Samia Chowdhury, chief
executive officer of MTB Foundation, attended the distribution event.
The initiative reflects
the foundation's efforts to support vulnerable communities through livelihood
development and income diversification. By providing productive assets, the
program aims to create opportunities for women to contribute more directly to
household earnings while helping fishing families build greater financial
resilience.
