Bangladesh, Ireland emphasize migration, cultural cooperation in renewed partnership

Dhaka: Bangladesh and Ireland have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, placing particular emphasis on enhanced cooperation in migration and cultural exchange.

During a courtesy meeting held this morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ambassador of Ireland to Bangladesh (resident in New Delhi), Kevin Kelly, met with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam. The Irish envoy congratulated the state minister on her recent appointment and expressed optimism about further strengthening ties between the two nations, read a press release.

Both sides highlighted migration as a key area of collaboration, recognizing its growing importance in fostering people-to-people connections, skills exchange, and economic opportunities. Discussions focused on improving consular cooperation and ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways that benefit both countries.

Cultural cooperation also featured prominently in the talks, with both parties underscoring the role of cultural exchange in building mutual understanding and strengthening long-term partnerships. Opportunities for collaboration in education, sports, and the arts were explored as avenues to bring the people of Bangladesh and Ireland closer together.

In addition to migration and cultural ties, the meeting covered broader areas of cooperation, including trade and commerce, development partnerships, and engagement in multilateral forums. The state minister sought Ireland’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy for the Presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (2026–27).

The discussions also touched on regional and global issues, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and enhanced international cooperation.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to continue dialogue and translate shared priorities into tangible outcomes, particularly in the areas of migration governance and cultural connectivity.
