Bangladesh, Maldives eye stronger cooperation in migration, tourism

Dhaka: Bangladesh and the Maldives have agreed to deepen cooperation in migration, expatriate welfare, and tourism as the two countries seek to expand bilateral engagement in people-centric sectors.

The understanding came during a bilateral meeting between Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and his Maldivian counterpart, Iruthisham Adam, in Malé on July 26.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations through enhanced cooperation in migration and expatriate welfare, tourism, education, healthcare, the blue economy, and maritime connectivity.

They also exchanged views on possible high-level visits and explored the establishment of a direct shipping link to facilitate bilateral trade and improve connectivity between the two countries.

Dr. Rahman reaffirmed the government's "Bangladesh First" foreign policy, saying Bangladesh remains committed to advancing partnerships that directly benefit its people.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening people-to-people contacts between the two friendly nations as a foundation for broader cooperation.

The Maldives is an important overseas employment destination for Bangladeshi workers, and the discussion on migration and expatriate welfare comes as Bangladesh continues efforts to improve labor mobility and ensure better protection for its migrant workforce abroad.

Tourism also featured prominently in the talks, with both sides expressing interest in expanding cooperation in the sector alongside greater maritime connectivity.

Maldives' State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam were also present at the meeting.
