Bangladesh seeks bigger share of Thai tourist market

Dhaka
: Bangladesh's tourism industry is exploring ways to attract more visitors from
Thailand by promoting its cultural heritage, natural attractions and
distinctive travel experiences.
The
issue was discussed at a tourism dialogue organized by the United Tourism
Stakeholders Society of Bangladesh (UTSSOB) in Dhaka following an 11-day
familiarization trip by Phiraya Woranitiyaowapha, Managing Director of Thai
tour operator Rinnaya.
She
proposed a "Kolkata-Plus" model, under which Bangladesh could be
promoted as a three- to five-day extension for tourists already visiting
regional destinations such as Kolkata and Kathmandu.
The
Sundarbans, Khulna, Paharpur and Mahas-thangarh were identified as attractions
with strong potential for such itineraries.
She
also pointed to poor road conditions, long travel times, inadequate roadside
facilities and visa-processing difficulties as obstacles to attracting
tourists.
