Former IATA head Willie Walsh takes charge as IndiGo CEO

Dhaka: The immediate past Director General of IATA, Willie Walsh, has officially taken charge as the new Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, India's largest airline by market share, as per an announcement made on August 3.

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, welcomed Walsh to the organization, noting that the airline is entering its third decade and is poised for the next phase of its growth. Bhatia added that Walsh's global experience would help accelerate IndiGo's international strategy.

Responding to the announcement, Walsh said IndiGo has built a strong legacy over the past two decades and is now among the largest airlines in the world. He called this an especially exciting time to join the carrier, given India's rapidly expanding aviation market.

Walsh is widely recognized as one of the industry's most respected leaders, known for steering major carriers through growth and challenging operating conditions. He began his aviation career as a pilot at Aer Lingus before rising to become that airline's CEO in 2001.

He subsequently led British Airways as CEO from 2005 to 2011, followed by a decade at the helm of International Airlines Group between 2011 and 2020. Most recently, Walsh served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His appointment as Indigo CEO had first been confirmed back in March.

As IndiGo's new chief executive, Walsh will oversee the airline's overall management and strategic direction. His mandate includes accelerating global growth, improving operational efficiency, strengthening network and commercial strategy, and enhancing the customer experience.

Bringing more than four decades of global aviation leadership experience, he is also expected to work closely with IndiGo's Board and leadership team as the airline moves into its next phase of expansion, aiming to reinforce its position among the world's leading carriers.
