Govt. to set up 100-bed transit accommodation facility for migrant workers

Dhaka: Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has announced that a 100-bed transit accommodation facility will be established at the Hajj Camp in Ashkona to provide temporary shelter for outbound migrant workers facing emergencies or flight disruptions.

The minister made the announcement on July 26 while visiting the Hajj Camp near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, according to a press release.

The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment following the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and a proposal from the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Speaking during the visit, the minister said the ministry currently operates the Wage Earners' Centre, which has accommodation for 49 migrant workers. However, to reduce the hardship faced by overseas-bound workers during emergencies, particularly when flights are delayed or cancelled, an additional 100-bed facility will be introduced at the nearby Hajj Camp.

The accommodation will include 50 beds for men and 50 separate beds for women. The project will be fully financed by the Wage Earners' Welfare Board under the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.

Highlighting the government's migrant-friendly policies, Ariful Haque Chowdhury said the government is committed to expanding services and welfare facilities for Bangladeshi migrant workers.

"Flights are often delayed or cancelled due to conflicts, adverse weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. During such situations, many migrant workers face difficulties finding temporary accommodation near the airport. This new facility at the Hajj Camp will significantly ease their suffering," he said.

Among those present during the visit were Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Md. Mokhtar Ahmed, Religious Affairs Secretary Munshi Alauddin Al Azad, and senior officials of the Hajj Camp.
