WTTC outlines seven principles for sustainable tourism growth

London
: The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has introduced a set of seven
principles aimed at helping destinations manage tourism growth while ensuring
long-term benefits for local communities, businesses, and visitors.
The
framework, outlined in a new policy brief titled "Destination Stewardship:
Creating Value for All," encourages governments, tourism authorities, and
private sector stakeholders to adopt proactive planning and collaborative
approaches to make tourism more
sustainable.
WTTC
said tourism growth should be measured not only by visitor numbers but also by
resident satisfaction, community benefits, and the long-term resilience of
destinations.
The
seven principles include planning collaboratively, prioritizing resident
satisfaction, preparing for future challenges, using data-driven
decision-making, expanding tourism across locations and seasons, ensuring
shared prosperity, and building readiness to respond to emerging pressures.
The
report highlighted examples from destinations including Madrid, Colorado,
Bogotá, Dubrovnik, New York City, and the Balearic Islands.
The
council also recommended actions, including monitoring resident sentiment,
identifying tourism pressure points, promoting lesser-known destinations, and
encouraging responsible visitor behavior.
