Anis Ahmed elected Chairman of Eastern Bank


Dhaka: Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) has elected entrepreneur Anis Ahmed as its new Chairman, effective July 27, following a unanimous decision by the bank's Board of Directors.
Ahmed succeeds to the role after serving on the board's Executive Committee and previously chairing the Risk Management Committee. He is the Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of Singapore-based MGH Group, which operates across 26 countries in sectors including logistics, supply chain services, aviation, retail, and financial services.
In a statement, Ahmed said the bank would focus on accelerating digital transformation while promoting greater representation of women in senior leadership positions. He added that EBL aims to strengthen its position as a lifestyle-focused banking brand backed by strong financial fundamentals.
Apart from his corporate role, Ahmed has also backed several Bangladeshi technology startups, including ride-sharing platform Obhai, insurtech venture Waadaa Insure, and accommodation platform Jatra.
EBL said Ahmed's international business experience and strategic leadership are expected to support the bank's long-term growth strategy, enhance customer services and create greater value for shareholders.
The bank added that the leadership transition marks the beginning of a new phase focused on innovation, digital banking, and sustainable growth.
