HKIA clinches platinum award at ACI's Green Airports Recognition 2026

Dhaka: Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has received the Platinum Award at the Airports Council International's (ACI) Green Airports Recognition 2026 for its "HKIA Flood Resilience Studies" project, earning top honors in the category for airports handling over 40 million passengers per annum.
Organized by ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, the annual recognition promotes best environmental practices in aviation. This year's theme, "Climate Change Adaptation," recognizes airports for outstanding performance in adjusting to climate-related challenges.
Julian Lee, Executive Director of Finance at Airport Authority Hong Kong, said, "We are honored to receive this prestigious award. As Hong Kong faces heavier rain and typhoons, this award affirms AAHK's strong commitment to climate resilience at HKIA. The project findings further enhanced our climate risk management."
Separately, HKIA reported steady air traffic growth in April. The airport handled 5.67 million passengers and 34,445 flight movements, marking year-on-year increases of 9.4% and 5.5%, respectively. Cargo volume reached 423,000 tonnes, up 4.9% year-on-year.
Overall passenger growth was supported by the Easter holiday, with daily traffic peaking at over 210,000 on April 3. Transfer and transit passengers led segment growth, followed by visitors. Most regional markets expanded, with the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia at the forefront, while the Middle East was the only contracting region.
Cargo growth was mainly driven by transshipment and imports, which posted year-on-year increases of 20.2% and 6.5%, respectively. The decline in exports narrowed to 0.3% year-on-year. By region, growth in Europe and Southeast Asia offset declines in North America and the Middle East.
For the first four months of 2026, passenger volume rose 13.0% year-on-year to 22.3 million, while flight movements increased 5.1% to 135,090. Cargo throughput grew 3.7% to 1.63 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, HKIA handled 63.54 million passengers and 401,240 flight movements, representing year-on-year increases of 13.7% and 6.6%, respectively. Cargo volume grew 2.9% to 5.12 million tonnes over the same period.
