Thailand to launch seaplane service linking Krabi, Phuket

Dhaka: Thailand is preparing to launch a seaplane service connecting Krabi and Phuket by the end of this year, aiming to boost tourism connectivity across the Andaman region and strengthen the country's standing as a regional aviation hub.
In a recent announcement, a Deputy Spokesperson of the Thai Prime Minister's Office said Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul are prioritizing transport connectivity and aviation development to promote Thailand as an aviation hub.
Krabi International Airport has been selected as the country's first pilot location for the initiative. The airport is slated to be developed into an "Airport for Regional Development," designed to integrate air travel with marine routes and island tourism seamlessly.
Trial flights on the Krabi-Phuket route are expected to begin within this year. The service aims to offer a faster, more convenient travel option, particularly for international visitors, and serve as a model for other coastal areas.
Deputy Transport Minister Pattaraphong Praphatprasit recently visited Krabi International Airport to monitor progress and consult with government agencies and private sector stakeholders on the project.
To support the rollout, the Ministry of Transport is forming a strategic integration committee to oversee operations. The body will include government representatives, aviation specialists, and private companies, with a focus on maintaining aviation safety standards.
The project is also expected to support related industries, including hotels, restaurants, emergency medical operations, and maritime security, while generating employment and income locally.
Thailand had previously announced a similar seaplane project in Trang province, planned as a collaboration between the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and private operators Siam Seaplane and Thai Seaplane. That project was expected to begin operating mid-this year, but relevant departments have yet to provide updates.
