HKIA Terminal 2 opens; 15 airlines to relocate by mid-June

Dhaka: Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has opened its rebuilt Terminal 2 (T2), with departure operations commencing on May 27, and 15 airlines set to transfer check-in services to the new building in phases through mid-June.
The opening ceremony was held May 22. Hong Kong Airlines became the first carrier to relocate, shifting its check-in to T2 on May 27. Greater Bay Airlines will follow on June 3, and HK Express on June 10, with the remaining carriers, including selected Cathay Pacific flights, completing the transition shortly after.
The 15 airlines primarily operate short-haul and regional routes. Passengers checking in at T2 will board from Terminal 1, using the Automated People Mover connecting the two buildings.
The new departure hall features 160 check-in counters across eight aisles, self-bag-drop facilities, biometric e-security gates, and re-engineered screening lanes. T2 is directly linked to the Airport Express station and T1 via an air-conditioned footbridge, with 29 bus routes adding a T2 stop. Airport operator Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) expects the terminal to handle around eight million passenger journeys in its first year.
A T2 concourse with 27 additional boarding gates is scheduled to open in 2027.
T2 marks the first major capacity expansion since HKIA began simultaneous three-runway operations in late 2024, part of the HKD 141 billion (equivalent to USD 18 billion) Three-Runway System program. AAHK chairman Fred Lam said the May commissioning was timed to accommodate the anticipated summer travel surge.
